Recap: Gleich der nächste Split in Darmstadt

Der zweite Split am zweiten Wochenende für die Hedgehogs. Das ausführliche Recap, dieses Mal von unserem Headcoach Luiz Gonzalez.

After enjoying the Easter holiday weekend off, our 1. team took to the field again, this time meeting their old rivals Darmstadt Whippets at Memorial Field. The well-known rivals are back in the same division again after 3 years absence, caused by the recess due to the pandemic and a one year league transfer for our team.  As in previous years, both teams delivered a game day with plenty of action highlighted by good sportsmanship and great camaraderie.  At the end, a short-handed Hedgehog was able to return back from Hessen with a split that has them in the middle of the standings of the young 2. BL Sudwest season.

For the Hedgehogs, manager Luis Gonzalez started on the mound with Justin Wegener behind the plate. The games started as pitchers duel,  with plenty of zeros on the scoreboard despite multiple hard hit balls by the Whippets. Fortunately for the old Heidelberger pitcher, his team’s strong defense kept the powerful offense baffled as hard hit balls were caught without  making much damage. In the middle innings, the hogs combined 7 hits to produce 5 runs, each one of them brought home by different hitters putting the “good guys” on top. A late-game attack by the Whippets put the game at risk, but at the end game 1 goes for the Hedgehogs as Michael Jung goes to the mound to save the day for the hedgehogs earning his first save of the season.

Highlights for the Hedgehogs:

Michael Jung: 3 for 5,  1 run,  8 outfield put outs and a game saved

Jonas Ortmann: 2 of 4,  1 double, 1 run and 1 RBI

Luis Gonzalez: 8+ innings pitched, 2 earned runs allowed

The second game brought the reliable Michael Jung to the mound, again pitching to Justin Wegener. The excitement after winning the first game did not last long, as the Whippets get score 3 runs in their first inning. In the second inning, the Hedgehogs managed to put a couple of runs on the board in the second inning thanks to an 2 RBI hit by Aaron Braun. However, the “Hessen” took a definite lead later that inning helped by a poor defense execution by the “Heidelberger”. With the Whippets ahead by 10 runs after the 5th inning, the umpires called “Ballgame” ending the action early and the gameday with a split.

Highlights for the Hedgehogs:

Aaron Braun: 1 hit, 2 RBI

Michael Jung: 2 hits

Burak Celik: 1 single, 1 RBI

The Hedgehogs are happy to come back with another split.  Next for the Hedgehogs: on April 30th the team hosts the Neuenburg Atomics for another exciting baseball day.
